Complications of urinary tract infections in pregnant women: a review

Introduction: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common clinical complications during pregnancy, due to anatomical and physiological changes that occur during this period. These infections are often caused by bacteria from the intestinal microbiota, with Escherichia coli being the main culprit. Objective: To review the existing literature on UTIs in pregnant women, highlighting associated complications and best practices for diagnosis and treatment. Method: An integrative literature review was conducted using articles published between 2016 and 2021 in the PubMed, SciELO, and LILACS databases. Studies in Portuguese, English, and Spanish that addressed UTIs in pregnant women, their complications, and treatments were included. Results and Discussion: The reviewed studies indicate that infections in pregnant women can lead to serious complications, such as preterm birth, low birth weight, and systemic infections. Early diagnosis is essential to prevent these complications. However, treatment is challenging due to restrictions on antimicrobial use during pregnancy. The choice of antibiotic should be based on the precise identification of the causative agent of the infection to minimize risks to the fetus. Conclusion: Urinary tract infections in pregnant women require special attention due to their potential complications. Early identification, appropriate treatment, and prevention are essential to ensure the health and well-being of both mother and baby during pregnancy. Regular prenatal appointments and early screening are essential for the effective management of these infections.
